Readings: Read about Flip the Classroom. Below are several articles, blog posts, a Ted Talk, & a presentation about this idea. Digest at least a couple and create a blog post with your thoughts on how this relates to CALL and your potential teaching environments.

Flip teaching is a format of education which reverses the roles of homework and classroom teaching.

The traditional pattern of secondary education has been to have classroom lectures, in which the teacher explains a topic, followed by homework, in which the student does exercises. In flip teaching, the student first studies the topic by himself, typically using video lessons such as those provided by the Khan Academy. In the classroom, the pupil then tries to apply the knowledge by solving problems and doing practical work. Different kinds of Activities

Information on how to create these types of activities below.

JQuiz. The first stage is to enter the questions and answers for your exercise. First, start the JQuiz program. You should see an interface like the one below.

Look at the picture below, and type in the information:

Type the title in the title box.
Type the question in the question box.
Make sure that "Multiple-choice" is selected in the drop-down list box to the right of the question. This defines the type of question you want to make.
Type the answers in the boxes on the left, and the feedback on the right. Note that each answer, right or wrong, has its own feedback.
Check the "Correct" checkbox next to answer B.

To add another question, click the up arrow next to Q 1

To save the JQuiz, so you can edit it later, click File

To save the quiz as an html page, click File/Create Web Page/Standard Format

JCloze is used to make gap-fill or cloze exercises. The idea of a gap-fill exercise is that the student completes all the answers before checking; in other words, it's a holistic exercise. When all the answers have been entered, the student presses the Check button to mark the answers. Correct answers will be inserted into the text; any incorrect answers will be left in textboxes, so that they can be corrected. When the student checks an answer that is not completely correct, a penalty is incurred, so the score depends on the number of checks required before the answer is completely correct.

In a JCloze exercise, you can include a Hint button which will give the student one free letter of the answer he or she is currently working on (based on where the cursor is). You can also include a specific clue for each gap. Using the Hint or Clue buttons.

Making a gapfill is easy -- see the picture below for basic steps:

JMatch is used to create matching exercises. Basically, this means that a list of items appears on one side, and each one must be matched up to an item on the other side.

JMatch output comes in two types: standard and drag-drop. The standard output (see an example) uses a drop-down list of items on the right. This is the format to use when you have more than seven or eight items, and the items on the right are only text; if you have only a few items, and especially if the items are graphics, you may want to use the drag-drop format (see this example). Don't use the drag-drop format if you have more than eight items, because scrolling on the page will make dragging and dropping difficult.

To make a JMatch exercise, enter each pair of items on the same line, as in the picture below. When you export to create the Web page, the program will shuffle the items on the right for you.

JMIX can be used to created scrambled word or scrambled sentences.

To save the quiz for editing later, click File/Save as

To save the file as a webpage, click File/Create Webpage / Drag/drop Format

JCross is used to make crossword exercises. There are two steps to making an exercise: first enter your letters in the grid, then add the clues.

To make the grid, either enter letters manually or click Manage Grid/Automatic Grid Maker.

and then enter the words and click Make Grid

When you've created the grid, click on Add Clues. Then, to add each clue, click on the word, type the clue, and press the OK button:

Presentation Guide

Most of you probably already know how to create Powerpoint presentations. In case you don't there are some guides below. This skills page will focus more on how to find, publish, and share useful presentations. Firstly, it's worth nothing that Powerpoint is not the only option for creating presentations and whereas Powerpoint costs hundreds of dollars to legally purchase, some other optoins are free.

Google Docs - free to use with your gmail account. Much simpler and less sophisticated than Powerpoint, but makes it very easy to collaborate and publish online.You can upload save file as a ppt or pdf for offline usage and also upload ppt files you're already created with Powerpoint.

Impress - is part of the OpenOffice package which is free and includes alternatives for MS Word and Excel as well. It's very similar to Powrpoint, but a bit simpler to use and less sophisticated in its options.
Prezi is also a cool new way to create presentations and publish them online if you wish. You can link to any of these presentations or embed them on your website. Some presentations from Prezi, Slideshare and Authorstream can also be downloaded, but you'll need to create an account with each in order to do so. Presentations made with Google Docs can also be downloaded, but there is no directory listing the Google Presentations. People just post them on their own sites.

There are also a number of sites that allow people to upload their presentations so that other people can view (and sometimes download) them. Some of these are:

Slideshare - largest collection of online presentations. Also includes 'slidecasts', audio narraated presendations
Authorstream - also includes the option for users to include audio narration
Voicethread - includes the option for viewers to respond to presentations with text, audio or video.
You can also search through thousands of other presentations on these sites. Here are links to presentations tagged with EFL or ESL

If you're feeling ambitious, go to google docs and create a google presentation (or upload an existing ppt) and embed it on your blog.

How to embed presentations on your blog

On the presentation page (Slideshare or other site), click 'embed' and copy the code. Customize if you wish.

Create a new post on your blog. Give it a title. Click 'edit html'. Paste the code, label appropriately.

How to download online presentations

From Slideshare

First, log in to your Slideshare or Authorstream account. When users publish presentations, they have the choice of making it available for download or not. If a presentation is downloadable, you'll be able to click on the download link. You can also select the download option when searching for content, so that you'll only see downloadable presentations. When you find one you'd like to download, you should see a 'download' link at the top of the presentation. Click that and save the file.

If you see a Google Presentation embedded on a page (like on this page: http://21ctools.wikispaces.com/Google+Reader ) click Menu

Publishing a Video on YouTube

First, sign in at Youtube.com with you Gmail ID.

*** In some countries (like Korea) it will be necessary to go to the bottom of the YouTube page and select
Location: Worldwide
in order to upload videos.

Then Click 'Upload'

There are two ways to publish videos on YouTube - upload a video file or record from your webcam.

If you choose 'upload video', you can upload any of these file types:
.mpg, .mov, .wmv, .flv, .avi, mp4

Files can be up to 2GB in size, but must be less than 10 minutes. in length.
After you chosen the file to upload, you'll see a window like the one below.
Enter information about Title, Description, tags, and category. You can also select your privacy settings.
Then click 'save changes' and you're done.

If you choose to record from a webcam, you'll see a window like this. Click 'allow'.

When you see this window choose your video device and audio device. You should see your video in the video window and audio volume meter movement on the side. When you're ready, click 'ready to record'.

When you're done, click the red square at the bottom.

After that, you can preview (watch what you just recorded), re-record (if you're not satisfied and you want to do it again), or publish.

Once you've published, you can click My Videos (upper right part of your screen) to see what you've published so far.

Then click edit to make any changes to the title and description of your videos.

Congratulations ~ You are now a YouTube Star!

Meghan let me know that she will be out of town and I just saw from Sarah's tweet that she will likely be out of commision as well. Sarah, kudos on tweeting your injury! One-handed post-surgury participation is welcome, but I certainly understand if you are unavailable. (Update: Just saw your blog post Sarah and sounds like you are still functioning. If you do show up, perhaps we can create a multimedia presentation of your latest 'break' :)

Chat can be a useful in a variety of ways for langauge learners. It can allow them practice their writing skills and overcome the affective filters that can be part of using their L2 to interact with others. There no formal assignment for this Training page, but feel free to blog about any of the tools you try.

Computer based games, activities, and quizzes are perhaps the most common examples of CALL. These can be created with downloadable software or online services. It is possible to create activites using a program on your computer (like Hot Potatoes) or online site (like Proprofs, Quzlet, or Google Forms). There are also many, many activities already online that you can access and sometimes download.

Hot Potatoes
-Create any kind of Hot Potatoes activity. Take a look at Jeff's Hot Potatoes Guide if needed. The activity can be very simple (i.e. a 3 questions quiz, a gap activity with a few blanks, etc. ).
- Save it twice. Once as a Hot Potatoes file, once as an html file (Save as & Create webpage)
- If time permits, try different kinds of activities

Use Google Forms (guide here), Quizlet, or Proprofs.com Quizmaker and try to create a basic quiz or survey with at least two questions. Post a link to that quiz (or embed it) in a blog entry on your blogger.com blog.

I have always learned the most about teaching from watching other teacher 'do their thing'. I believe this especially applies to online teaching.

Instructions (from the Hot Potatoes site)

Download Java Hot Potatoes which will run on Mac OS X, Windows, Linux or any computer running a Java Virtual Machine. To install and run Java Hot Potatoes on Mac OS X:
1. Download the file javahotpot61.zip from the link above.
2. Unzip that file on your computer, you will have a folder called JavaHotPot6.
3. Drag the JavaHotPot6 folder to the Applications directory on your computer.
4. Open the folder and double-click the JavaHotPotatoes6 application icon.
5. Trash the javahotpot61.zip file.

When you first start up Hot Potatoes, it will ask you for your user name. This name is stored on your computer, and not sent to anyone; it will be inserted into your exercises to identify you as the author. You must provide a user name before you can use all the features of Hot Potatoes.

Audacity - a free, cross-platform, open source tool for recording and editing audio.

Installing and Using AudacityYou can download Audacity here.
In order to export mp3 files with it, you will also need to download and install the Lame Encoder.

Basic Record, Stop, & Play Controls

To edit the audio, click the 'selection tool

highlight and then the delete button on your keyboard. You can use the magnifying glass to zoom in or zoom out. To remove a track, click the 'x' and start again.

Saving a file as an mp3
To do so, click 'File/Export'

Save as file type 'mp3'.

When the edit metadata window pops up, you can enter information or ignore it. (meta data is the info you would see on your mp3 player when listening to this file).

In the save as window, options allows you to change the bit rate (quality of the file - bigger=larger file, higher quality). 64kbs should be fine. Click 'save'.

Using PBWorks

PBWorks.com allows you to create a type your own 'wiki'. This can be a useful way to create a website, especially when collaborating with others.
They also allow you to upload file types that many other sites don't allow (including .htm files and .mp3 files). This will be useful when we create Hot Potatoes activities and audio files.

To get started, follow the instructions below.

Go to https://my.pbworks.com/?p=create
and fill out the basic information

Check your amil and click on the link including in the email.

You will be taken to a page that includes...

Click on 'Create a workspace'.

Find Basic/Free at the bottom of the page and click 'select'.

Choose the address for your wiki. Select 'For Education' and check 'I
agree...'. Then click 'next'.

Allow anyone to view your workspace, check 'I agree...' and Take me to
my workspace.

You can then 'create a page', upload files, 'edit' the page, or use the
navigation to see default pages or pages that you created.

When you click upload files, you'll see a list of files you're already uploaded.

Click on one of those files and then click the 'Download' tab.

You will be able to see your page, and copy the URL to post it to your blog.

If you don't have a bookmark or link to a site, type the URL directly into the address bar. You don't ever need to type http:// and usually you don't need www. You also don't need to delete what's there - just click (automatic highlight) and type.
When using Chrome, you can search by typing terms directly in the address bar. Google search shortcuts here. (time define weather sunset convert)

Trouble reading the letters? Ust ctrl+ or ctrl- to make text larger or smaller.
Use tabbed browsing Chrome MSIE Firefox, IE8
When in doubt, right click. This will usually give a set of
options for what you want to do.

For example, when you see a link that you want to open, but don't want
to lose the page you're on, right click, 'open link in new
tab'.
Made a mistake? Deleted something by accident? ctrl+z (undo) Most programs allow you to 'undo' a number of your previous steps.
Learn general functions, not specific places to click.
(e.g. old blogger vs. new blogger)

If there's something you can do with a program or site, it's in the menu somewhere. Check the menu!
Use your Bookmarks Toolbar to easily find sites you frequently visit ('how to' guide here)
Update your programs once in a while. Find 'about program' in your menu options. If you don't have the latest version find the udpate option.

To make sure that these appear in the top menu, go to your dashboard and click Design. Add a Gadget as shown below.

Blogger is Google's blogging platform. You can register for a blog at Blogger.com and your blog will be created at blogname.blogspot.com

Creating a Blogger Blog

Go to Blogger.com and sign in with your gmail ID and password. This is the first screen you'll see.

Click 'Create Your Blog Now'

Choose any blog title you wish (it can be simple like Jeff's TTP Blog')

The Blog address will be more challenging. You need to check availability for any address you choose. No spaces allowed.

When you have found one, click 'create blog' and you'll see this page. Click which template looks nicest to you. This can be changed later.

Click 'Start Blogging'

Your DashboardYour dashboard is were you can control all aspects of you blog. To get there click the orange B in the upper left corner of your screen.

Creating Posts / Creating Pages

Most of the time, when you create content on your blog, you will create a 'post by clicking 'New Post' at the upper right corner of your blog page or on your Dashbaord.

Blogger 'Pages' are used to create things like an About page or a Contact me page. Pages are usually shown on the top menu, but do not appear on the main page stream of content. Blogger's Page guide is here. In the screenshot below. 'About', Resources, Skills, etc .are 'pages'.

To create a page, click 'Edit Posts' (confusing, I know).

...and 'New Page'.

To add pages to your top menu, click Design

Add the 'Pages' Gadget to the top menu block of your blog

To post photos on your blogger blog.

Create 'New Post' and choose the 'Componse' tab. Then click the Image icon.

Select 'upload' and choose file. Find the file(s) on your computer. You can select mulitple images if you like. Then click 'Add Selected.

Once the photo has been loaded if you mouse over it, you can select the site, orientation (left center right), add a caption, or remove it.

Posting a YouTube video on your blog

Go to YouTube.com. Find a video you'd like to post. Beneath the video, click 'share' and then 'more'.

Click the blogger icon

Another window will pop up with either some code or a screenshot of the selected video. Either way, click 'Publish Post'. That's it.

Adding Gadgets to your Blogger Blog

From your Blogger Dashboard, click Design

Make sure your on the 'Page Elements' Tab

Click 'Add a Gadget' on the side bar

Look through the different categories, select gadgets of interest

Adjust settings if deisred. Then Click 'Save'.

Click and drag the gadget into the order you want.

Click Save again in the upper right.

Diigo is a social bookmarking tool that allows you to save, describe, organize, and share your bookmarks from any computer, any time. To begin using Diigo....

Click Join Diigo

Fill in the basic user info

Go to your email and click the activation link.

Go to the Diigo Tools Page
Click 'Get it in Chrome extension gallery now'

and then install.

Once it is installed, you will see a blue 'd' in the upper right corner of your browser. Any time you want to bookmark a page, you can click book mark. If you'd like to highlight part of the page or create a sticky note, click those. You can also share this link via twitter, facebook, email, and/or create an annotated link.

Diigo Groups allow you to join other groups of people interested in the same kinds of sites as you. You can choose to keep bookmarks 'private' if you wish.
Go to the Learning CALL group page and click 'join this group'.

Message to owner is optional and you can choose how often you want to receive email notifications of new links to the group (you can change this later).

Once you've joined a group, when you bookmark a site, you can share you bookmarks more one or more of them when you click bookmark. Using relevant one word will help you organize your links later.

To log out of Diigo, click the triangle nex to Feedback and 'Sign Out'. To see all of your bookmarks, click 'My Library'

Task:
Once you've created your account and installed your Diigo Chrome tool, visit the Megalist of websites, start exploring and bookmarking sites of interest.
You can also find websites in some of the group listed above or some of these other locations. For anything that's relevant to CALL, include the efl537 tag and share it with the Learning CALL group. (note that there are no commas between tags)
